the last blizzard in this city was 2011, 20 inches of snow. we'll see if this will set a record overnight. to give you an idea how big this storm is, how many states are affected tonight, this is a picture from nasa that we're looking at. you can see the storm right now stretches all the way north up in maine all the way down to the mid-atlantic and new jersey. there are near whiteout conditions across the northeast and i am in new york city where the mayor is warning the storm is unpredictable, he's been instruct is everyone to stay inside though there are a lot of the people out tonight. pictures of destruction from superstorm sandy are fresh in his mind and the mind of many people in the new york city area. new york city police commissioner ray kelly is here with me. we'll be talking in just a moment. we want to go to the north first and new england which has been getting pummeled through the day. this is one of the ten biggest storms in history. in boston right now, already breaking the record of 27 inches which was set ten years ago back in 2003. and that is the fear that made massac

you think the city's response has been so far to the blizzard? >> it's been great. they have given us a lot of notice and the signs on the highways and the emergencies on the internet and other signs across the city. it's been -- they have prepared us well. >> i know you guys also stocked up on supplies. earlier, some of the supermarkets in the city were running out of milk, running out of bread. i think you have plenty of other types of supplies to keep you busy. >> we might have other supplies to keep us busy, but we are also, you know, do have supplies and water and things like that. but you know, we are trying to realize that we will be here for the weekend and trying to make sure we have everything that will keep us sustainable through that time period. >> they were telling me earlier, anderson, they hadn't seen snow like this in a few years? >> long time. >> a few years, gut obviously, we still have a lot more to go before the night is over. >> jason, we'll be checking with you. we'll be on the air for two hours and more coverage after that, so all night long. a short drive down

of the snow is east of new york city. everywhere you see pink through here, that's a foot of snow or more, and the purple is 20 to 30 inches of snow. that's from portland, maine, to boston, to providence, that's still to come. you already have 6 on the ground. there's plus 20. that's still a good snowfall. albany, you'll see about 6 to 10 more. down toward new york city, it appears you're almost in this dry area where there will be 8 to your north, 4 to your south, but not a lot more to come still in the city compares to what is on long island, over a foot still to come here. and this is the danger zone, just snowing everywhere out here. it's coming down in buckets because at the low comes through here, its closest position is going to be to boston, not new york city. that's why snow is not going to be as heavy in the city as in boston because the low is much closer there. then by tomorrow afternoon, literally, this thing is gone. saturday, 4:00, 5:00, the snow is completely over. only the wind is left. erin. >> what's the bottom line? there have been competing models. someone said the eu

knicks basketball team, they had been scheduled to fly back home, back to new york city after tonight's game in minneapolis. they are stuck in minnesota tonight because of this blizzard. it is dumped already several inches of snow on the city. there is much more to come here before in the overnight hours. i want to go to ellison's standing out there in manhattan. it looks a little calmer. it looks nice. >> reporter: you are looking at an impromptu snowball fight. started out with about ten people. the bars are getting out and everyone is rushing down the street running through it. the plows broken up and the fire department broke it up and they were serenaded with snowballs as well. having a lot of fun as best they can. >> serenaded by snowballs. i see a car and i know you have been driving around. we were talking earlier, with the governor, deval parick, in forcing a travel ban. you could not be on the roads after 4:00. what is the deal? why am i seeing cars? >> there are basically a few cars here and there but they are usually following emergency vehicle plows or people with plows o

the city. he's stuck. he came into this church parking lot. was going to plow it, got halfway through, but the conditions proved to be too much, so he's been struggling to get out of that particular position for the past 20 minutes or so. but again, anderson, there is a fleet of some 5,000 vehicles like this that are out on the streets throughout the state, plowing roads. plowing the primary routes, plowing parking lots and secondary routes like the one that you see here. looks like he's finally going to make his way out of here, but we're going to move back just a little bit. as you know, anderson, in addition to the fleet of equipment that they have out in the streets, the governor has also enacted a plan banning basically all vehicles on the streets except for emergency vehicles. that has certainly helped. it's kept a number of people off the street out here in boston, in massachusetts, as the storm continues to barrel down. i can tell you just from the experience here, it's an icy, wet, blinding, bitter type of snow. it just hits your face, it's painful being out here. so this is

. this is a ton going on right now in politics. but in this city you might never know it. because the thing that is happening here that is dominating everything else, that is all but eclipsing all those other significant things going on in the country which might need some attention, hey, alaska is kind of succeeding, the thing that d.c. is spending all its time on and that the entire federal government has been wrenched around into dealing with is none of the real crises or real fights or real opportunities for progress in american politics right now. with all of that going on what washington is smothered by right now is this, the freaking sequester which congress and the white house agreed to which they almost unanimously agree would be a terrible thing to inflict on the country, and which they could just decide not to do simply by repealing it. but apparently they're not going to repeal it. the white house taking every opportunity now to spell out the harm that this thing is going to do to the country. they have put out fact sheets on the hundreds of thousands of jobs expected to be lost

the city of selma to the state capitol of alabama, to the state capitol, which is montgomery, about 50 miles away. they were stopped that first day when they were trying to march that distance before they ever got out of selma. here, trying to cross the alabama river to get out of town, to get out of selma, the 600 peaceful protesters were met by hundreds of alabama state police and local police. the policemen attacked the protesters. they used tear gas on them. they beat them with billy clubs. the protesters were whipped and stomped on by police horses. the leader of the march, john lewis, took a billy club to the head. he very easily could have died on that bridge that day. 17 of the marchers were sent to the hospital. that happened on sunday, bloody sunday, march 7th. now i said that they did not get out of selma that day when they were beaten on that bridge. but the nation was horrified. and the movement was galvanized. and two days after bloody sunday, two days later on tuesday, march 9th, they went back. only this time it was not 600 people marching that route nonviolently, this
